President Donald Trump’s administration continues to push for significant cuts to the federal workforce, with various departments taking steps to reduce personnel.
The Pentagon, under Secretary of Defense Pete Hegseth, has implemented an immediate hiring freeze on civilian employees and new civilian positions, aiming to reduce its workforce by 8-10%, starting with probationary employees. Meanwhile, the Department of Education is offering buyouts of up to $25,000 to certain employees, with a deadline for acceptance. The Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) is also under scrutiny, with employees receiving weekly emails asking them to report their accomplishments in detail, while one top spokesperson, Thomas Corry, resigned after clashes with agency leadership. At the US Agency for International Development (USAID), Nicholas Enrich, the acting administrator for global health, was placed on leave after criticizing Trump’s political appointees for hindering life-saving humanitarian efforts, particularly during an Ebola outbreak in Uganda, which he argued has been severely impacted by the ongoing freeze.
